Restriction of Hazardous Substances also known as RoHS is the legislation passed by the European council about not using the some of the toxic materials in the circuit board design like the Lead element. After this legislation, all the manufacturers are bound to sell their products free from these substances.
There are some materials that are banned and come under the heading of RoHS. These are Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (CrVI), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE). They are banned because these materials are very harmful for the environment and human beings. At the time of manufacturing they can cause a lot of harm to the landfills and the human nature.
There are many systems that are employed to check or verify the compliance of the materials with the RoHS. Portable RoHS analyzers, also known as X-ray fluorescence or XRF metal analyzers are normally used for this purpose.
