Types of Transistors
Depletion MOSFET Transistors:
The Depletion Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFET) are slightly different from FET Transistors in a way that they have larger input impedance voltage and they normally do not draw any current on its gate. When a small voltage is applied to the gate of the MOSFET, then the current stops flowing from the Drain to the Source.
They are classified into two main types:
- N-Channel Depletion MOSFET
- P-Channel Depletion MOSFET
N-Channel Depletion MOSFET: They are normally ON, but a small negative voltage that is applied to the gate can stop the flow of the current from the Drain to the Source.
P-Channel Depletion MOSFET: They are also always ON, but a small positive voltage applied to the gate can stop the current flowing from the Source to the Drain.
Enhancement MOSFET:
They are the slightly different from the Depletion MOSFET. It is also classified in to two main categories.
- N-channel Enhancement MOSFET
- P-channel Enhancement MOSFET
N-channel Enhancement MOSFET: They are normally OFF in actual conditions, but when a small positive voltage is supplied at the gate, unlikely to Depletion MOSFET, it can start to flow the current from the Drain to the Source.
P-channel Enhancement MOSFET: They are also normally OFF, but when a small negative voltage is supplied at the gate, they start to flow the current in a direction from the Source to the Drain. But if a voltage at the Source is greater in value than the voltage at the Drain then they do not need any of the current at the gate.
Uni-Junction Transistors (UJT):
They are the types of transistors which are used as the switches mostly but not as the amplifiers, unlike to other transistor kinds. In this type of a transistor, the main source of the current is the emitter current of the circuit boards.
