Layers Types of Rigid Flexible Printed Circuit Boards

There are many criteria on which you can classify anything. But when it comes to Rigid-Flexible Printed Circuit Boards, one can differ it on the basis of layer stack up types. In the following paragraphs, we will explain the necessary types of the given pcb.

 Flexible Printed Circuit Boards

  1. Single Layer: The single layers pc boards are defines as those devices in which copper is sandwiched between two layers of adhesives. In the outer end of both sides, a material called Polyimide is used. The holes to the conductors can be on the one side or both sides. It is suitable for both static and dynamic flex-rigid PCBs.
  2. Double Layer: It contains the two or double conducting layers with the insulating layers in between. Outers layers can either have the covers or the pads. It has plated holes that provide the connection between the layers. Moreover; vias can be covered on both sides. You can also use the external pins and connectors from either of the side. Like the Single layer, it can be used for both static and dynamic circuit boards.
  3. Multilayer: It has three or more flexible conductive layers with flexible insulating layers between each one. You can use both vias in it, blind or buried. Like the double layer, it has plated through-holes to be used for the connections. Components, pins and connectors can be used from external means. It is usually used for the static flex applications.
  4. Multilayer Rigid-Flex: It contains two or more conductive layers with either flexible or rigid insulation material as insulators between each one. It can also have either the buried or blind vias. Interconnects or vias can be used or covered for sole insulation. Heat sinks and mounting brackets can be used in this type of system.
